Researchers at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, are conducting experiments on plant root systems to develop crops they say will be able to sequester carbon.
The agriculture portion of the $3.5 trillion spending package that Democrats are putting tougher is still a work in progress. In addition to $28 billion in conservation spending that still needs to be added to the legislation, there also will be some new farm debt relief.
Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced the first recipients of his personal $10 billion Earth Fund, including 16 environmental, advocacy and research organizations. The Salk Institute, based in La Jolla, will receive $30 million for climate change research.
The Salk Institute’s Harnessing Plants Initiative to combat climate change using plants, led by Professor Joanne Chory, executive director of the Harnessing Plants Initiative, will receive funding of more than $35 million from over 10 individuals and organizations through The Audacious Project.
