The Biden administration, USDA, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have found something to agree on when it comes to the meatpacking industry: The next farm bill needs to do more to help smaller-local meat processors get up and running.
USDA announced $196 million in loans and grants to strengthen domestic food systems, as the new White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience, which includes Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, launched its first meeting Monday.
The Department of Agriculture has announced an additional $9.6 million in grants and loans as part of what it said is a comprehensive approach to increase meat processing capacity, farm income and consumer choice, and create good-paying jobs.
Projects across the country are set to receive funding from Department of Agriculture initiatives seeking to expand the number of processing facilities available to livestock producers.
