Despite a flurry of last-minute action from the Biden administration on biofuel policy, producers are still uncertain on how reliable those moves are under Trump 2.0. 

Across the biofuel industry, some sectors are optimistic the Biden administration's framework for the key 45Z tax credit will boost clean fuel production and support farmers. However, the proposals are not a slam-dunk, and groups are preparing to continue advocacy with the new Trump team.

Three advanced biofuel projects will receive a total of $6 million to support the federal government’s efforts to boost production of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF.

Bayer said Thursday it has acquired camelina germplasm, intellectual property, and materials from Smart Earth Camelina Corp. with the goal of boosting its leadership in biofuel feedstocks. 

Red Trail Energy, an ethanol plant on a North Dakota carbon capture site, is one step closer to being purchased by biofuel company Gevo following a vote by its equity holders approving the transaction.

Those in the biofuel industry and lawmakers from biofuel-heavy districts are expecting enough bipartisan support to preserve the 45Z credit in tax reforms next Congress.

Biofuel groups are expressed increasing concern about the lack of guidance from the Treasury Department for a clean fuel tax credit that is set to take effect Jan. 1, saying investment has already slowed due to the uncertainty.

Kip Tom, who leads President-elect Donald Trump’s ag coalition, says he expects the transition team to move much more quickly to fill cabinet positions. Whether Tom is going to be in it, perhaps as agriculture secretary, remains to be seen. He served as U.S. ambassador to the UN agriculture and food programs during the first Trump administration.

Election results should start coming in tonight, with control of the White House, Senate and House all very much up in the air. But keep in mind it could be days before we know which party controls the White House and U.S. House, given the time it will take to count votes.
