A group of House Republicans has appealed to President-elect Donald Trump to negotiate trade agreements that open new markets for U.S. cotton farmers during his second term.
In this joint opinion piece, Reps. Clay Higgins and Michael Cloud, in collaboration with Reps. Barry Moore, and Lauren Boebert, argue that Congress needs to provide immediate economic assistance to farmers.
The chaos among House Republicans isn’t the only hurdle facing a new farm bill. Senate Republican Whip John Thune, R-S.D., says the Senate Ag Committee remains divided over key issues, including what to do about the major commodity programs.
The House Agriculture Committee is adding seven new Republican members. All but one, Texas Rep. Michael Cloud, are first-term members. The others: Kat Cammack of Florida, Randy Feenstra of Iowa, Michelle Fischbach of Minnesota, Tracy Mann of Kansas, Mary Miller of Illinois and Barry Moore of Alabama.
