Dairy producers have approved a series of modifications to federal milk marketing orders, including reversing a change to milk pricing that was made in the 2018 farm bill, USDA announced Thursday.
Both dairy producers and processors scored wins in a long-awaited proposal USDA to overhaul federal milk pricing in line with changes in industry practices and market conditions.
The Agriculture Department is proposing to scrap a change made by the 2018 farm bill to the way fluid milk is priced under federal milk marketing orders. The proposal is part of a broader plan, which must be approved by producers, to reform the pricing of dairy products.
If the last seven weeks of hearing testimony is any indication, USDA has a major challenge ahead in formulating proposed changes to the federal milk marketing order and balancing the wish lists of dairy producers and processors.
National Farmers Union members agreed Tuesday to put market competition, dairy policy reform, climate change, food processing reform and the agricultural supply chain at the top of their policy agenda for the upcoming year.
