Shining Light on Farm & Food Policy for 20 Years.
Thursday, December 19, 2024
In line with their goals to help farmers adopt regenerative agriculture, Truterra has made four new data-driven regional and crop-specific programs available.
Truterra paid more than $5.1 million to farmers last year to store carbon, bringing the total for the first two years of its program to over $9 million, the company said Wednesday.
Bel Brands, USA and Land O’Lakes, Inc. say the first year of a three-year sustainable farm project reported a carbon sink of 784 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent per acre.
Conservation groups and the Biden administration are betting big that the promise of direct payments to farmers will supercharge their interest in cover crops, a practice relatively few have tried despite documented benefits to soil health, greenhouse emissions and water quality.
This is the third part of a four-part series examining the promise of cover crops, the potential for them to meet the nation’s environmental goals that rest on their success, and the possible pitfalls facing policymakers.
Truterra, a Land O’ Lakes subsidiary focused on sustainability, announced on Monday details about the second iteration of its carbon program, which will start in 2022.
