House Republicans are scaling back their ambitions when it comes to slashing spending at USDA. The House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee today will take up a draft spending bill for fiscal 2025 that would reduce total funding for USDA, FDA and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission by just over 1%.
House Republicans are proposing more modest cuts to spending at USDA than GOP appropriators tried last year, but they also are attempting to block USDA's new regulations for the meat and poultry industry and slow down new food traceability requirements.
The House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee is set to roll out its fiscal 2025 spending bill as the House GOP makes another run this year at slashing domestic spending programs. The subcommittee is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the FY25 Agriculture bill, which funds USDA and FDA as well as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
