FDA Commissioner Robert Califf is due to announce this week what steps he'll to take to tighten leadership of the agency’s food programs, while the Senate Agriculture Committee resumes its hearings on the next farm bill, and corn growers try to raise awareness of Mexico's looming ban on biotech corn.

The Food and Drug Administration is calling for a new “regulatory pathway” to allow for the use of use of cannabidiol, or CBD, in dietary supplements and food additives, after concluding that “it is not apparent how CBD products could meet safety standards” for those products.

Frank Yiannas, deputy commissioner for food policy and response at the Food and Drug Administration, announced Wednesday he is stepping down from the agency at the end of February. In his resignation letter, he also called for an empowered deputy commissioner for foods to help better manage food safety oversight at FDA.

The World Food Prize Foundation has named Terry Branstad, a former Iowa governor and U.S. ambassador to China, as its next president.

The Senate Agriculture Committee has scheduled four hearings on farm bill issues, starting with a review of the trade and horticulture titles next Wednesday.
