The House and Senate farm bill negotiators meet formally for the first time this week with the expiration of the 2014 law less than a month away.

USDA today forecast net farm income for this year at $65.7 billion, up from a February projection but down $9.8 billion, or 13 percent, from 2017, when the broad measure of farmland profits increased nearly 23 percent.

The USDA has discovered that a cow in Florida was infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), more commonly known as mad cow disease, according to government and industry officials. A USDA spokesman confirmed that the Florida cow suffered the rare "atypical" type of BSE that is believed to develop randomly in cows.
