Farm Hands on the Potomac: Spier to lead USW; FSIS leadership changes; new Clean Fuels officers

Mike Spier, current vice president of overseas operations at U.S. Wheat Associates, was elected as the group’s next president and CEO by the board of directors. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced staff changes. Naturipe promoted Jim Roberts to president. 

The Congressional Hunger Center named Katharine Emerson, chief of staff for World Food Program USA, as the new chairwoman. The American Agricultural Law Association welcomed its new president-elect, Ashley Ellixson of Arizona, and directors, Chelsea Good of Kansas and Kale Van Bruggen of Minnesota.

Daybreak Oct. 21: Data show USDA hires 5,000 from partner groups for conservation

USDA is relying heavily on outside groups and federal retirees to help farmers use the billions of dollars in new conservation funding for climate-smart practices. Based on data provided to Agri-Pulse under the Freedom of Information Act, the Natural Resources Conservation Service now employs about 5,000 people a year who work for partner organizations.
