The California Air Resources Board has launched the Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative, awarding $27 million to map and assess air quality and greenhouse gas emissions.

The project, funded through cap-and-trade dollars under California Climate Investments, will focus on communities disproportionately affected by pollution.

A CARB summary said “at least 60% of monitoring will benefit California Climate Investment Priority Populations” and that there are 64 Consistently Nominated Air Protection Program Communities under consideration for mapping.

The program will utilize “vehicles equipped with specialized air quality devices” to map pollution and GHG emissions, eventually providing the collected SMMI data through a portal for public access.

A project expert group, which has yet to be created, will be responsible for working with co-partners Aclima and Kearns & West to create a community engagement plan and community air monitoring plan.

Monitoring locations will be selected through public input. The first opportunity for comment is on Sept. 17 via Zoom and requires online registration.
