Kids may have access to more locally grown foods this school year under new USDA regulations that have taken effect.
A final rule, which took effect July 1, permits schools to use "locally grown," "locally raised," or "locally caught" as a specification when buying unprocessed agricultural products.

Earlier this year, FNS also gave schools the choice to serve protein-rich breakfast foods such as yogurt, tofu, eggs, nuts and seeds to help them offer less sugary foods and permit vegetarian diets and other food preferences.
