The nation’s largest shell egg company has agreed to purchase a poultry packing plant and convert it into an egg production facility.
Cal-Maine Foods recently announced a deal with Tyson to buy a shuttered Dexter, Missouri, packing plant and “initially convert the broiler processing plant to an egg grading facility.” Subject to the transaction’s completion, the company also plans to make “additional investments in the facility” including “processing capabilities,” Cal-Maine said in a release.
“The Dexter location offers an important opportunity to expand our geographic footprint and enhance our ability to serve our valued customers with added production and distribution capabilities in Missouri and surrounding markets,” Cal-Maine President and CEO Sherman Miller said.

According to the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Cal-Maine’s new Dexter location “will include a chick hatchery, feed mill, and maintenance of breeder flocks in addition to the production, processing, packaging, and distribution of shell eggs.”
Missouri Ag Director Chris Chinn called the announcement “a win for poultry farmers, grain farmers and the many agribusinesses who support those segments of the industry.”
Cal-Maine said it expects the transaction to close later this year; MDED said the facility is expected to begin operations this summer.
