Senators will return to Capitol Hill for hearings this week after the August recess, while Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack travels to Cornell University for an agriculture seminar.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to be back in session Sept. 12.

Vilsack's visit to the New York-based school happens on Wednesday. During the seminar, he will discuss the agency's work on a number of fronts, including its efforts on market development, competition in the agriculture industry, and innovation. 

The Senate Environment and Public Works committee on Thursday will examine the drinking and wastewater infrastructure programs in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Witnesses include North Dakota Rural Water Systems Association Executive Director Eric Volk, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Elizabeth Biser, and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission General Manager and CEO Kishia L. Powell.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee also meets Thursday to discuss "the Department of Energy's role in ensuring U.S. competitiveness and security in emerging technologies," looking in particular at advancements in artificial intelligence. 

Also on Thursday, the Economic Research Service will host a webinar on the National Food Security Assessment, which provides current estimates and 10-year projections for food security in 83 countries.

Events of note outside of Washington, D.C., include the National Land Conservation Conference in Portland, Oregon, from Sept. 6-9, and the Plant Based World Expo North America in New York on Sept. 7 and 8.
