In a major victory for grower groups, a federal appeals court vacated EPA regulations banning the use of chlorpyrifos, which should allow the insecticide to continue to be used in agriculture.
CalEPA announced today that the state's Department of Pesticide Regulation is acting to ban the use of chlorpyrifos in California by initiating cancellation of the pesticide.
EPA will make a decision about whether to revoke food tolerances for chlorpyrifos within 90 days of receiving an order from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, a Justice Department lawyer promised a 9th Circuit panel during oral arguments Tuesday.
Growers in California and several other states are fighting to retain use of chlorpyrifos, a broad-spectrum insecticide environmentalists and farmworker advocates have sought to ban for years.
