AquaBounty Technologies, which first secured approval of genetically engineered salmon in 2015 but faced relentless litigation and a lack of consumer acceptance, is shutting down its fish farming operations.
The Food and Drug Administration must evaluate the risks posed if genetically engineered salmon escape into the wild, a federal judge said in a case involving FDA’s 2015 approval of AquaBounty’s plans to create and farm GE Atlantic salmon.
The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved bills to fund the USDA, FDA and Army Corps of Engineers that steer clear of environmental issues addressed by the House’s versions of those same spending bills.
