Glyphosate will be renewed for another 10 years in the European Union after member states could not reach the required majority to reauthorize use of the chemical, the active ingredient in Roundup.
A European Food Safety Authority review did not find “any critical areas of concern” in a peer review it conducted of a risk assessment of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as the European Union prepares to vote later this year on the future of the herbicide on the continent.
Bayer scientists on Tuesday discussed a June draft report from regulators in four European Union countries that concluded the chemical meets the EU approval criteria for renewed registration. They also underscored the company's belief that the product offers benefits of effectiveness not available in its alternatives.
The European Commission is expected to ban the use of the insecticide chlorpyrifos in January following a vote Friday by its Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed that cited health risks to children.
New assessments by the European Food Safety Authority confirm the risk of three neonicotinoids to bees, EFSA said last week, and may lead to a permanent ban in Europe of the insecticides.
