A surge of highly pathogenic avian influenza cases in dairy cattle and the first death of a person from the virus have refocused attention on the ongoing outbreak, which shows no signs of fading away anytime soon.
USDA has rolled out a plan to test the nation’s milk supply for avian flu, which has swept through a large portion of the nation’s dairy herd since March.
Dairy cattle transported from Texas have been implicated in the spread of the H5N1, or bird flu, virus found in at least four of the seven states outside of Texas that have reported infections, according to states where H5N1 has been found.
