Welcome to the new year, and a new, GOP-controlled Congress. Lawmakers are facing some tough debates and choices when the 119th Congress kicks off Friday, starting off with Mike Johnson’s bid for re-election as House speaker.
House Republicans descended into further chaos Thursday, unable to agree on a plan for a temporary speaker, and Speaker-designate Jim Jordan unwilling to drop end his race.
Rep. Jim Jordan, a long-time budget hawk who’s consistently voted against farm bills, won the GOP nomination for House speaker on Friday, but like Steve Scalise before him he still has to win over dozens of his Republican colleagues.
