The largest beef buyer in the world has updated its plans for the use of antibiotics in cattle production, but critics say more specificity and urgency are needed to better address the issue.
Bringing all medically important antimicrobial drugs approved for use in animals under veterinary oversight and promoting proper stewardship of antimicrobials are among the goals of a five-year plan released by the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine on Friday.
The National Pork Board (NPB) is pointing to the FDA’s recent Report on Antimicrobials Sold or Distributed for Use in Food Producing Animals as evidence that the nation’s 60,000 pig farmers are doing what’s right on the farm for people, pigs and the planet when it comes to their commitment to antibiotic stewardship.
