Senator Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., is urging USDA to take quicker action on debt relief programs for economically challenged farmers who have historically been discriminated against.
Agriculture Department leaders didn’t officially receive a slate of interim recommendations from an Equity Commission convened last year until Tuesday, but the department says many of the suggestions are already in the works.
The commission studying discrimination in Agriculture Department programs says USDA should look closely at eliminating the county committee system that has historically played a large role in the Farm Service Agency’s management of farm programs.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced plans Monday to assign a commission to study issues of equity in agriculture and also named key advisers for racial issues and market reform.
