A recent assessment found that California agencies responsible for food safety and water quality reporting requirements could benefit from expanded reliance on digital reporting tools and technical assistance.
A new Cal Poly San Luis Obispo study offers a rare glimpse into the accounting books of a typical lettuce operation in the Salinas Valley. The research found a 1,366% increase in regulatory costs since 2006 to comply with various labor, food safety and environmental laws.
Regulatory costs grew 265% on average for valley farmers, while total production costs rose by just 22% for those trying to produce food and fiber in California.
