A senior Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee said Monday lawmakers are considering attaching a package of farm income support to a farm bill extension that could be enacted at the end of the year.
A stopgap spending bill released by House Republicans Saturday includes a one-year extension of the 2018 farm bill and funding for some relatively small programs that expired on Sept. 30.
Congressional leaders are headed to a showdown on multiple issues in coming days, including the need to agree by Nov. 17 on another stopgap spending bill, which this time could include a one-year extension of the 2018 farm bill.
Congress is almost certain to move an extension of the 2018 farm bill in the next month or two, and it could shake up cost estimates for modifications to commodity programs and other provisions.
The top Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee suggested Friday Congress should move a one-year extension of the 2018 farm bill as soon as November to give lawmakers more time to write a new farm bill.
