LEESBURG, IND. Sept. 4, 2015 – A prominent Indiana farmer, Kip Tom, this week joined the crowded field of Republicans who want to succeed U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman in Congress.
Stutzman, a LaGrange county farmer, will be vacating his
seat to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Sen. Dan Coats.
Tom told supporters in an email obtained by Agri-Pulse that “we have an opportunity to elect a conservative leader who has experience dealing with the most pressing issues facing our country, and specifically the challenges we face daily right here in northeast Indiana.”
Tom, a 60-year old Leesburg farmer who stepped down from running the day-to-day operations of his family business last month, is the managing member of Tom Farms, and has served on several local and national farm boards, including the national FFA Foundation.
“I stepped down from running our family business - we have been farming in Northeast Indiana for seven generations - and I’ve been proud of our growth,” Tom said in announcing his run to supporters. “Together, we have grown Tom Farms into an industry leader. Now I want to direct my energy into helping our nation grow again.
He faces a crowded GOP field, including state Sens. Jim Banks of Columbia City and Liz Brown of Fort Wayne, former Wisconsin state senator Pam Galloway of Warsaw and former Whitley County Council member Scott Wise. Tommy Schrader and Huntington businessman Todd Nightenhelser – both of Fort Wayne - are running as Democrats.
