WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2014 - A group formed to protect the Renewable Fuel Standard is launching a six-figure ad buy on TV and radio to support the reelection bids of U.S. Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota, and Representatives Collin Peterson of Minnesota, Gary Peters of Michigan and Lee Terry of Nebraska. Franken, Peterson and Peters are Democrats while Terry is a Republican.
The ads by Fuels America thank the four politicians for “supporting local jobs and standing up to the oil industry against our foreign oil addiction,” according to Aaron Wells, with the Smoot Tewes Group, a political and public affairs consulting firm.
A 60-second radio ad for Peterson, for example, praises the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee for “knowing how important renewable fuels are to Minnesota’s rural economy.” Peterson is being challenged in his bid for a 13th term by state Sen. Torrey Westrum.
Franken is battling Republican businessman Mike McFadden, a former CEO of a Minneapolis investment bank, for a second six-year term.
In Michigan, Peters is being challenged by Republican Terri Lynn Land, a former Michigan secretary of state, while in Nebraska, the Republican Terry is locked in a tight race against Democrat State Sen. Brad Ashford.
On its website, Fuels America calls itself a “coalition of organizations committed to protecting America’s Renewable Fuel Standard and promoting the benefits of all types of renewable fuel already growing in America.” Its members include the Renewable Fuels Association, the ethanol maker Poet, Growth Energy, the National Corn Growers Association, the National Association of Wheat Growers and Archer Daniels Midland Co.
