NEW YORK, April 15, 2013 – A new poll shows that while America has become more environmentally conscious in recent years, most citizens are not yet willing to shell out more money to “go green.” The marketing group Harris Poll’s survey of 2,276 U.S. adults found that 38 percent of respondents “personally care a great deal about the current state and future of the environment,” compared to 31 percent a year ago. But only 30 percent were willing to pay extra for “environmentally-friendly products or services.” 59 percent responded that organic labels were “just an excuse to charge more.”
Mike de Vere, President of the Harris Poll, connected the results to the recovering economy. "While Americans feel better about the economy, many are wary of the 'greenwashing' concept that gives companies a chance to cash in on consumers who want to help the planet but are confused by all the eco-friendly jargon,” he said in a statement.
