USDA has ordered states to address delays in processing applications and recertification for eligibility for recipients under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The department says 33 state agencies are failing to meet requirements for processing SNAP applications on time and 20 are out of compliance on recertification deadlines.

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service is implementing a five-step “escalation” process for noncompliant states, according to a press release. FNS is also enforcing “data-driven corrective action plans” and will be deploying federal oversight teams to monitor and train state agencies.
States are required by law to process SNAP applications within 30 days for most households and within seven days for families in urgent need, the department says.
