California is receiving a $600 million federal grant to increase transmission capacity and clean energy access, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday.

California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission, California Independent System Operator, Pacific Gas & Electric Company and Southern California Edison will form the California Harnessing Advanced Reliable Grid Enhancing Technologies for Transmission (CHARGE 2T) program to use the funding.

The press release said the grant, which comes from the bipartisan infrastructure law passed in 2021, will support 300 jobs, improve on 100 miles of transmission lines and create an estimated $200 million in energy savings for California energy customers.

Four northern California tribes are receiving $88 million for a separate grid project to create a decarbonized network of microgrids in one of PG&E’s least reliable zones.
