One of the biggest days of the year for chicken wing consumption is coming up, and the National Chicken Council expects another massive quantity to be consumed as Americans watch Sunday’s Super Bowl.
NCC estimates football fans will eat 1.45 billion chicken wings while the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers Sunday in Las Vegas. The figure is actually unchanged from last year’s estimate, a lack of growth NCC attributed to economic factors shaping consumer shopping decisions.
The flat projection, the group said in a release, was in line with “USDA reporting chicken production levels are slightly down from last year and wing stocks in cold storage down 13% in November compared to the year prior. This could explain the higher demand and thus the higher wholesale prices we are seeing on wings.”

NCC’s release also cited Circana data showing that since January 2023, retail chicken wing prices are down about 5%, and frozen wing prices have declined about 11%.
According to NCC, Sunday’s projected consumption is enough to distribute four wings to every man, woman and child in the United States.
