WASHINGTON, JULY 1, 2012 – With the Fourth of July federal holiday conveniently nestled in the middle of the week, it will be an incredibly slow-moving week in Washington. Complicating the situation is that the region was hard hit by storms over the weekend and many people are still without electricity.
However, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is hosting a conference call Monday, along with Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus to talk about energy and climate change. USDA is also releasing a few reports, with the Crop Progress report on Monday and U.S. Export Sales on Friday.
For anyone in the District for the Fourth of July, it’s arguably one of the finest places to celebrate America’s Independence. Events start at 11:45 on the Fourth, with America’s National Independence Day Parade moving down Constitution Avenue and 7th Street NW.
Later in the day, you can attend a free, 90-minute live musical extravaganza on the U.S. Capitol’s West Lawn. As always, the concert features the National Symphony Orchestra and will be capped off with a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the concert begins at 8 p.m.
Last, but certainly not least, you won’t want to miss the spectacular fireworks display on the National Mall. Fireworks begin at 9:10.

Monday, July 2:
The House of Representatives and Senate have constituent work weeks and will reconvene July 9.
Secretary Vilsack, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change Heather Zichal will host a conference call to announce that funding is available through the Defense Production Act and the Department of Energy.
