WASHINGTON, June 24, 2012 – The Supreme Court is expected to decide this week -before the Court’s term ends - on the politically-charged issue of health care reform and whether or not the Affordable Care Act is constitutional.

The health care law is widely viewed as the signature domestic policy accomplishment of the Obama Administration and Democrats are preparing to rally behind the president in case the nation’s highest court rules strikes down the measure.

Americans are extremely polarized over whether or not they agree with some or all of the provisions.

For example, fifty-six percent of people say they are against the healthcare overhaul and 44 percent favor it, according to a survey of 1,043 Americans conducted online from June 19-23 by Reuters/Ipsos. However, an overwhelming 82 percent of survey respondents favored banning insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. At the same time, 61 percent of Americans are against the individual mandate, while only 39 percent favor it.
The court is also set to decide the fate of Arizona’s controversial immigration law, which Governor Jan Brewer signed in 2010. The law contains four separate provisions, including one that makes it a crime for immigrants without work permits to seek employment.  The court could rule on them as a package or in a piece by piece fashion.

This was expected to be a week when you could watch debate on the Agriculture Appropriations bill – and get a preview of what the 2012 Farm Bill debate might look like on the House floor. However, Majority Leader Eric Cantor has only scheduled debate to start on the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act on Tuesday, making no mention of the agriculture appropriations bill. An Appropriations committee spokesman says it is "unclear" whether or not the bill will hit the floor this week.

Late last week, the White House threatened to veto the agriculture appropriations bill if it arrived on the president’s desk in its current form.

The House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to start marking up the 2012 Farm Bill on July 11.
