The National Pork Producers Council is urging employees across the various points of the pork production system to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The organization is launching a new “You’re essential, so it’s essential” campaign Wednesday to call on workers to get vaccinated.

“The National Pork Producers Council supports prioritizing COVID-19 vaccinations for essential pork supply chain workers, directly after health care workers and other high-risk individuals,” the organization notes on its website. “We encourage our workers to get vaccinated as the best defense against the COVID-19 virus.”

NPPC also referred interested parties to a multilingual website from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which provides a tool kit “designed for staff or organizations serving communities affected by COVID-19.”

According to NPPC, more than 500,000 people work in the U.S. pork industry including farmers, veterinarians, livestock haulers, processing employees, and other workers in the value chain. Vaccine prioritization by industry varies in different states, with some placing higher priority on farm and food workers.
