WASHINGTON, Mar. 10, 2017 – The Senate Agriculture Committee has officially received the nomination of Sonny Perdue to be the next Secretary of Agriculture, clearing a major hurdle in the confirmation process.
A spokeswoman for the committee confirmed the news to Agri-Pulse Friday morning. In a statement, Sen. Pat Roberts, the Kansas Republican who chairs the committee, said this will allow for committee consideration.

“Receiving the official nomination is a good step forward in the process of considering Governor Perdue to be the next Secretary of Agriculture,” Roberts said.
The FBI's report on its background investigation of Perdue was transmitted to the committee Friday afternoon, a source said.
On the day before his inauguration, Donald Trump, then the President-elect, announced Perdue as his nominee to be the nation’s 31st Secretary of Agriculture. Reaction from agriculture groups has been generally supportive, with many groups seeing Perdue, a former Georgia governor, as a candidate likely to pass through the confirmation process once it is underway.
