Washington, Dec. 15 – The Senate voted 81-19 Wednesday to pass an $858 billion tax relief and unemployment benefits package.
The compromise package, struck by President Obama and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), now goes to the House where several Democrats still continue to raise concerns about the estate tax provisions. Democrats are debating whether to rewrite the estate tax provision and substitute a 45-percent tax on estates over $3.5 million in place of the tax compromise's 35-percent tax on the amount of an individual's estate over $5 million, or over $10 million for couples.
