WASHINGTON, Oct. 17, 2014—USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today it has granted nonregulated status for a soybean variety developed by Monsanto Company that is genetically engineered (GE) for resistance to lepidopteran insects.
The soybean, referred to as MON 87701, includes resistance to the fall armyworm, as well as to the velvetbean caterpillar, soybean looper, soybean axil borer and sunflower looper.
Deputy Administrator of APHIS Biotechnology Regulatory Services Michael Gregoire wrote in his determination that the soybean is unlikely to pose a plant pest risk. Additionally, allowing the product to enter the marketplace “would have no significant impacts…on the quality of the human environment and will have no effect on federally listed threatened or endangered species.”
