WASHINGTON, June 10, 2013- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) extended the public comment periods for certain herbicide resistant crops developed by Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto. Online public meetings are also proposed to consider the crops genetically engineered to be resistant to the herbicides known as 2,4-D and dicamba.
USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today announced in the Federal Register (FR) the agency is extending the comment period to 60 days and holding virtual public meetings on the Notice of Intent to prepare two separate environmental impact statements (EIS).
The agency is seeking comments on its proposals to prepare Environmental Impact Statements for herbicide resistant corn and soybeans from Dow and herbicide resistant soybeans and cotton from Monsanto. Environmental Impact Statements are an additional step in the agency’s determination of nonregulated status for herbicide resistant crops.
APHIS said it will consider all comments received on or before July 17, 2013, instead of June 17. Online virtual public meetings will be held June 26, 2013, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. EDT and June 27, 2013, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT.
