WASHINGTON, April 10, 2013 – The Senate today approved, on an 87-11 vote, the confirmation of Sally Jewell to serve as secretary of the Interior Department.
Eleven Republicans, including Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., and Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R- Ga., voted in opposition.
Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., applauded the vote.
“Sally Jewell has the brains, the experience and the drive to lead the Interior Department, and I’m glad my colleagues voted overwhelmingly to approve her nomination,” Wyden said. “She made clear in her confirmation hearing that she intends to strike a balance between the dual roles of conserving and developing resources. That’s exactly the right approach to take on the diverse issues facing Interior, including safely developing natural gas, maximizing jobs and opportunities from recreation and improving management of federal forests.”
The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) welcomed Jewell’s appointment, noting the importance of her role administering the management of America’s network of public lands and resources.
“Secretary Jewell has called sportsmen ‘critical partners’ in assuring the responsible management and conservation of the nation’s natural resources,” said Whit Fosburgh, TRCP president and chief executive officer. “She understands that conservation equals jobs and that public lands fuel the recreation economy, including hunting and fishing. She knows that people need access to our lands and waters and that they want a quality experience at those places. Sportsmen appreciate these issues better than most.”
