Elementary students help First Lady plant White House vegetables

WASHINGTON, March 26, 2012- First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed elementary school students from New York, North Carolina, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC to the White House Monday afternoon to help plant vegetables during the fourth annual  White House Kitchen Garden spring planting.

Mrs. Obama planted the White House Kitchen Garden in 2009 as a way to talk about children’s health and promote her “Let’s Move!” initiative. The children invited to this year’s planting wrote letters to the First Lady about their own gardening projects.

“One of the reasons why we plant the garden is that it's an important way to have a good conversation about your health,” said the First Lady before the planting. “And the garden is a good way to start the conversation, because vegetables and fruits are a big part of a healthy diet.”

The White House Kitchen Garden, which is the first vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s Victory Garden, includes potatoes, spinach, broccoli, onions and radishes as well as other fruits and vegetables throughout the year. Children invited to this year’s planting came from the following schools and organizations:

Girl Scouts of Western New York, Troop 60325 from Fairport, N.Y.; Harriet Tubman and Bancroft Elementary Schools in Washington, DC; Mitchell Elementary School in Ames, Iowa; Stetser Elementary School in Chester, Penn.; and Sumner Elementary School in Greensboro, N.C.
