WASHINGTON, March 15 – Even though farmers and ranchers represent less than 2% of the U.S. population, every American depends on them to provide an abundant, safe and affordable food supply, noted Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., during an Agri-Pulse event to kick off National Agriculture Week on Capitol Hill. Roberts urged the crowd to do everything they can to share the wonderful success story of American Agriculture.
“We are going to need everyone working together to meet the challenges of feeding a troubled and hungry world,” said Roberts, who noted that global population is expected to soar past 9 billion people in the next four decades.
Roberts was one of several lawmakers who stopped by the Ag Day kick off reception to mix with Hill staff, agribusiness leaders, and farmers from around the country. Country and Western singer Michael Peterson entertained the crowd with stories and music like his hit single, “Drink, Swear, Steal and Lie.”
National Ag Day, March 15, is part of a series of events for National Ag Week, March 13-19, 2011. The events are planned to encourage Americans to learn more about how their food, fiber and fuel products are produced, value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy and appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.
