Republicans forcing WOTUS veto
WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2016 - Legislation
will be headed to the White House shortly that would kill the Obama
administration’s “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) rule, but President
Obama is certain to veto the measure.
House Republican leaders scheduled a
vote Wednesday on the Senate-passed disapproval resolution as part of their
plan to show they are addressing the demands of constituents and to make the
case for electing a Republican president in November.
“A one-size-fits-all policy coming out
of Washington, D.C., is not going to solve this issue,” Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio,
said of the WOTUS rule.
The White House issued a veto threat
in November before the Senate approved
the resolution, 53-44,
well short of the two-thirds margin needed to overcome a veto. The House margin
also was expected to fall short of two thirds.
“Simply put, S.J.Res.22
is not an act of good governance. It would sow confusion and invite conflict at
a time when our communities and businesses need clarity and certainty around
clean water regulation,” according to a statement of administration policy.
