WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2015 - Rep. Randy Neugebauer, who has played a role in both agriculture and banking policy, announced that he won’t seek re-election for an eighth term in his west Texas district.
The heavily Republican 19th district runs from Lubbock to Abilene and includes one of the largest cotton-growing regions in the world. Neugebauer said he would serve out the rest of his term.
“There will be a lot of speculation on why I came to this decision,” Neugebauer said. “Some will say it’s health reasons; I feel great and I am cancer-free. The bottom line is that I really think this is the right time for my family and me to have more time together. I have a four-year-old granddaughter that I have never been with on her birthday.”
Neugebauer, 65, won the seat after the retirement of former House Agriculture Chairman Larry Combest. Neugebauer is a senior member of both the Agriculture and Financial Services committees.
Neugebauer is only the fourth person to hold the seat since it was created in the 1930s.
