WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2013—National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson sent a letter to the members of Congress recently named farm bill conferees outlining his priorities for a final bill.
The letter emphasized the importance of maintaining farm bill permanent law, as enacted in 1938 and 1949, because it provides a requirement for Congress to update farm policy.
Included in NFU’s farm bill priorities are the linkage of conservation compliance to crop insurance included in the Senate bill and limits on farm payments through means testing.
Roger outlined several priorities, included the House farm bill’s fixed reference prices, “to provide protection against price collapse rather than basing price protections on a rolling Olympic average, as in the Senate bill.”
He also emphasized NFU’s preference for the dairy program included in the Senate bill, with includes a market stabilization program.
