Before Obama's State of the Union, 256-165 House vote favors spending cuts

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 - Just hours before President Obama is due to deliver his annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress, the House voted 256 to 165 to reduce non-defense federal spending to 2008 levels. In the largely party-line vote, 17 Democrats broke ranks to join with the unanimous Republican vote for H.Res. 38, “A resolution Reducing Non-Security Spending to FY 2008 Levels or Less.”

Two Republicans and 11 Democrats did not vote on the resolution. The 17 House Democrats who supported capping this year's non-security spending at 2008 levels were House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson, Minn., and:
