WASHINGTON, Sept. 30, 2015 - The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its preliminary report on U.S. total energy consumption for the first six months of 2015. Here are some of the highlights:
· U.S. primary energy consumption totaled 49 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), virtually unchanged from the first six months of 2014. Natural gas and nuclear electric power consumption each increased 3 percent, and petroleum consumption increased 2 percent. Renewable energy consumption decreased 2 percent, and coal consumption decreased 13 percent.
· U.S. primary energy production totaled 44 quadrillion Btu, a 4 percent increase compared with the first six months of 2014. Crude oil production increased 12 percent, natural gas production increased 8 percent, and nuclear electric power production increased 3 percent. Renewable energy production decreased 2 percent, and coal production decreased 8 percent.
· U.S. primary energy imports totaled 12 quadrillion Btu, a 2 percent increase compared with the first six months of 2014. U.S. primary energy exports totaled 6 quadrillion Btu, an 8 percent increase. U.S. primary energy net imports decreased 5 percent.
