WASHINGTON, April 21, 2014 – Tuesday is Earth Day, the annual celebration of the environment that dates back to 1970. Though some environmental regulations (including some from the Environmental Protection Agency) have proved controversial in the last year, a number of groups will come together all over the country on April 22 to observe the holiday.

The Earth Day Network, which seeks to spread Earth Day’s environmentalist message year-round, is hosting a number of events Tuesday all over the world.
In Washington, D.C.’s Union Station, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will host a number of presentations and hands-on demonstrations on Monday, April 21 and Tuesday, April 22. Hear a talk on the Earth’s biodiversity from a NASA scientist, or go flying with NASA as part of a “3-D visualization experience.” Click here for more information and the schedule.
The U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington will hold its annual Earth Day Festival on Friday, April 25. Representatives from local environmental organizations will be on hand to discuss their work. There will also be cooking demonstrations with seasonal produce. Click here for details.
If you’re like some in D.C., and find it hard to observe any holiday without a side of politics, the left-leaning Center for American Progress might have your event. The think tank has organized a discussion with Noah director Darren Aronofsky on the “larger intersection of environmentalism and faith-based advocacy and collaborations in combating climate change.” It’ll be held on Wednesday, April 23.
Also in D.C., the Inter-American Bank will host an Urban Sustainability Symposium. Presenters include Harriet Tregoning, the director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Economic Resilience. Details here.
The EPA will host Twitter chats on climate change every Tuesday in April. This upcoming Tuesday – officially Earth Day – will be no exception. Details, and other EPA-hosted events across the country, here.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture will celebrate Earth Day by planting a tree in honor of long-time employee Tony Evans, who passed away this year. State Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance will be on hand. Details here.
The Earth Day celebration at the Iowa State University in Ames will offer food, bike tune-ups and “sustainability-minded prizes.”
South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard will celebrate agriculture and conservation by giving the Leopold Conservation Award to 2014 recipients Lyle and Garnet Perman, their son Luke and his wife Naomi. The Permans manage a 7,500-acre farm in the state. “The management practices implemented on their Rock Hills Ranch demonstrate that active conservation efforts are not only good for the land, they are good for business,” the governor’s office says.
In Dallas, Texas-based non-profit Earth Day Texas, Inc. will host its annual outdoor festival. The event, meant to “show Texans how green lifestyle choices can lower their cost of living, improve their health and help save the environment,” will draw about 60,000 visitors.
PBS will air American Masters: A Fierce Green Fire, a one-hour documentary that charts the development of the environmental movement. It will premier nationally on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Details here; local listings here.
