WASHINGTON, Jan. 3, 2013 – House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was re-elected today to a second term as speaker after receiving 220 “yes” votes from Republican House lawmakers.

Nine Republican lawmakers did not cast votes for Boehner, instead voting for various non-candidates.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., received 192 votes from Democratic lawmakers. Five Democrats did not vote for Pelosi.

After the vote, Boehner urged lawmakers to focus on solving the debt issue.

“The American dream is in peril so long as its namesake is weighed down by this anchor of debt,” he said. “Break its hold, and we begin to set our economy free. Jobs will come home. Confidence will come back."
