WASHINGTON, July 10, 2013 - The President of the United States is doing his best to make sure American children eat their vegetables.

When asked about his favorite food at the second annual Kids’ State Dinner July 9 at the White House, President Barack Obama struck a chord with vegetable and produce groups by saying “broccoli.” Ray Gilmer, vice president of issues management and communication for United Fresh, said this is a small part of the president and first lady’s efforts to promote nutrition.

“We appreciate the emphasis on good nutrition and healthful eating that the president and First Lady Michelle Obama have made, and their efforts surely have made an impact on the children who were at the special event [July 9], as well as countless others across the country,” Gilmer said.

The Kids’ State Dinner was part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to end childhood obesity within a generation.
